University of Primorska awarded Horizon Europe project MOSAIC as coordinator
The University of Primorska has been awarded the research and innovation action (RIA) project MOSAIC (Materials for Off-site Structured Assembly of Intelligent Composites) as coordinator. The project will be funded under the Horizon Europe programme (call HORIZON-CL4-2025-05-MATERIALS-42). On 14 July 2026, the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA) confirmed that the proposal had successfully passed the evaluation process and had been invited to proceed with the preparation of the grant agreement.
The main objective of the MOSAIC project is to develop and integrate technologies for the modular construction of intelligent structures in the building sector. The project will develop a new class of polymer composites capable of damage sensing, self-healing, and reversible joining of components. This approach will enable the production of lightweight construction elements that can be prefabricated in a controlled environment and rapidly assembled on-site using reversible adhesives. As a result, construction time will be reduced, material consumption will decrease, and overall quality will improve. At the same time, integrated damage detection and self-healing capabilities will extend the service life of structures and reduce maintenance costs. Since the components can be disassembled and reused, they can be repurposed or recycled at the end of their service life, supporting circular economy principles. The applicability of the developed solutions will be demonstrated in two key areas: bridge construction and building construction.
Two units of the University of Primorska are involved in the project. The University of Primorska Faculty of Polymer Technology led the project proposal preparation and will play a central technical role in the development of intelligent composite materials for construction applications, while also being responsible for project coordination and management. The Centre for Knowledge Transfer and Innovation will contribute to market research activities, business model development, as well as intellectual property strategy and exploitation of project results.
The consortium, coordinated by the University of Primorska, brings together 15 partners from seven European countries, including leading research institutions (TU Delft, Technical University of Leoben, Budapest University of Technology and Economics, OST – Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences), technology and development centres (Fundación AITIIP, Polymer Competence Center Leoben), and industrial partners (Kansai Helios Slovenia, FiberCore, Fiber Elements, Haskoning, IRIS Technology Solutions, HOLOSS, UNE, Navarro Llima Abogados S.L.). The project will run for 48 months, with a total grant amount exceeding EUR 6 million.
The MOSAIC project addresses key sustainability challenges in the construction sector, which accounts for 37% of greenhouse gas emissions and 35% of all waste generated in the EU. The expected impacts include at least 30% lower operational costs, a minimum 20% extension of structural lifetime, and a reduction of more than 25% in the carbon footprint across the entire life cycle.
The successful acquisition of the MOSAIC project, coordinated by the University of Primorska, confirms the university’s research excellence and international recognition in the field of polymer composites. Collaboration with leading European research and industrial partners will create new opportunities for research and development, knowledge transfer, and the involvement of students in an international research environment.
